Compress a PDF to 1 MB

For forms that want all your pages in one file under 1 MB.

Runs on your device. Your files are never uploaded.

    What fits in 1 MB

1 MB is room for a multi-page document. In our tests:

    • 1 page: 582 KB without any extra compression. The photo was simply added to the PDF.
    • 3 pages: 854 KB at the tool's highest resolution and quality. Everything was sharp.
    • 10 pages: 963 KB at about 900 × 1200 pixels per page. Normal text was clear; small print was readable but soft.

How we tested: phone photos (12 megapixels, about 2 MB each) of A4 pages of 11-point typed text with a table and one line of 8-point small print, run through this tool with its default settings in Firefox on a laptop. Your results depend on your pages: dense text, colour and shadows need more space.

Tips for a 1 MB limit

    • Combine in the right order. Use the arrow buttons so the pages read the way the form expects, for example the front of an ID before the back.
    • Long documents get tight. 10 pages used almost all of the 1 MB in our tests, so with many more pages, remove the ones you don't need or split it across uploads.
    • Mixing PDFs and photos is fine. PDFs from banks or employers stay sharp; only the parts that need it are compressed.

    Questions

My file shows as 0.95 MB on Windows but the form says it's too big. Why?

Windows divides by 1,048,576, so it shows a smaller number than forms that divide by 1,000,000. The tool targets about 980,000 bytes, which fits either way. If a form still rejects it, try a slightly lower limit.

Does compressing remove anything from the file?

It clears the document's title, author and software fields. It doesn't add anything about you.
