    What fits in 200 KB

200 KB is enough for a short document, not a long one. In our tests:

    • 1 page: fits easily (168 KB) at the tool's highest resolution. Everything was sharp, including the small print.
    • 3 pages: fits (184 KB), but at about 720 × 960 pixels per page. Normal text was readable; small print was hard to read.
    • 10 pages: doesn't fit. The smallest the tool could make was 480 KB.

How we tested: phone photos (12 megapixels, about 2 MB each) of A4 pages of 11-point typed text with a table and one line of 8-point small print, run through this tool with its default settings in Firefox on a laptop. Your results depend on your pages: dense text, colour and shadows need more space.

Tips for a 200 KB limit

    • Upload one document per box. Limits this small are usually meant for a single item: an ID card, a certificate, a one-page letter.
    • Leave out pages that aren't asked for, such as blank backs or terms and conditions. Split PDF keeps only the pages you pick.
    • Crop the photo to the paper before adding it. A desk or table around the page wastes space.
    • Check small print, stamps and signatures at 100% zoom before you upload. If they're hard to read, ask whether the form accepts several files.

    Questions

Why is my PDF still over 200 KB?

Every page has to be stored as an image, and there's a point where text stops being readable. The tool won't go below 72 dpi; if it can't reach 200 KB, it offers the smallest version and tells you its size. Fewer pages is the fix.

Can I keep the text selectable?

Only if the file is already under 200 KB after combining. Text documents saved straight from Word often are. Scans and photos aren't, so they're stored as images.
