What fits in 500 KB
500 KB comfortably holds a few scanned pages. In our tests:
- 1 page: 280 KB at the tool's highest resolution and quality.
- 3 pages: 464 KB at about 1350 × 1800 pixels per page. Everything was sharp, including small print.
- 10 pages: just fits (480 KB), at about 650 × 860 pixels per page. Normal text was readable, but small print and fine details were not.
How we tested: phone photos (12 megapixels, about 2 MB each) of A4 pages of 11-point typed text with a table and one line of 8-point small print, run through this tool with its default settings in Firefox on a laptop. Your results depend on your pages: dense text, colour and shadows need more space.
Tips for a 500 KB limit
- The fewer pages, the sharper. In our tests 3 pages stayed sharp and 10 pages lost the small print. With more than a few pages, check every one closely.
- Bank statements and payslips downloaded as PDFs are often small already. Add them as they are; the tool only compresses if the combined file is over the limit.
- Black and white saves a little, but resolution matters far more. Leave it off unless the form asks for it.
- If 10 or more pages won't fit, see if the form takes several files and split the document into parts with Split PDF.
Questions
Is 500 KB the same as 0.5 MB?
Yes, counting 1 MB as 1,000 KB, which is how most forms count. The tool aims about 2% under 500,000 bytes, so it also fits forms that count in 1,024s.
How long does it take?
In our tests, a few seconds for 3 pages and about 20 seconds for 10 on a laptop. Phones are slower.
